The Certificate and Diploma Course in Therapeutics is an innovative course developed and administered by the Northern
and Yorkshire Regional Drug and Therapeutics Centre, in association with the School of Clinical and Laboratory Sciences, Wolfson Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, Newcastle University. |

The course is open to those meeting the following criteria |
|
|
| Graduates in medicine or pharmacy |
|
Other health professionals who have received initial training for independent or supplementary prescribing |
| Pharmacy technicians with an NVQ level 3 in pharmacy services,
supported by a BTEC in applied pharmaceutical science, or equivalent qualifications relevant for registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society |

Course Aims |
To assist in the
continuing professional development of health professionals with involvement in medicines use or management, through the provision of specialist postgraduate education tailored to identify vocational needs in the field of therapeutics. |

Course Objectives |
The Course has been designed to enable students to develop specialist knowledge and skills built on their previous educational and professional experience and targeted to their future needs. The defined objectives for the programme are: |

| to develop the knowledge and skills of health professionals in therapeutics as applied to primary and secondary care |
| to develop the knowledge, skills and approaches necessary for the implementation and management of rational prescribing |
| to offer a
structured introduction to research methods relevant to therapeutics |
| to develop approaches to information sharing and presentation skills for use in the health care setting |

Course Outcomes |
Consistent with the set objectives students demonstrate achievement through: |

| competence in progress assessments designed to test enhanced knowledge and clinical skills related to therapeutics |
| demonstrated development of knowledge, understanding, and skills required to prescribe rationally |
| enhancement of critical analysis and research skills necessary to support the practice of
evidence-based medicine |
| increased confidence through development in communication and presentation skills to support clinical practice |

Course Components |
The Certificate and Diploma in Therapeutics Course is organised in modules of 10 or 20 credits, equivalent to 100 or 200 hours course work each. Students are able to take sufficient modules in one year to obtain the diploma qualification, which requires 120
credits, or the certificate, which requires 60 credits. However, if they prefer they can also collect the required credits over and up to 3 years. This allows a flexible approach to learning. |
